Qk4, Inc., has been awarded the American Council of Engineering Companies’ prestigious Engineering Excellence Award for its work on the Churchill Downs West Parking Lot Expansion. Qk4 served as the civil engineer of record, providing parking lot and drainage design, landscape design, land survey services, geotechnical coordination, utility relocation design … and more.
The challenge for Churchill Downs was this: for decades, the Kentucky Derby’s growing popularity and success was limited by woefully inadequate parking that was poorly configured and prone to flooding. To meet the challenge, Churchill Downs improved and expanded its West Parking Lot to 60-acres, and Qk4 authored a unique design solution which included partnership and collaboration with the local Metropolitan Sewer District to offer a shared-cost approach to drainage. The result was a win-win-win for all parties, resulting in a modern and efficient parking facility for Churchill Downs, compliance with local MSD and federal EPA regulations, and a healthier and more environmentally stable storm water system for the City of Louisville, with reduced risk of area-wide flooding.
